From the origin of mankind, mishaps and accidents have always been among the major issues of survival. The human mind is wired in a manner that it automatically signals protective behavior in anticipation of any threat or danger from any aspect of the environment. We are aware that prehistoric humans lived in caves, and wore garments made from skins, and so on. The basic underlying aspect in all this is the needs for safety – safety from adverse weather made humans take shelter in caves, or to wear particular garments, or to avoid specific foods, etc.
With the increase in development in all spheres of human activity, the nature of work has become more intricate and complex. With these complications, the awareness of the need for safety has also grown over time. Today, most large organizations have a dedicated department which handles all aspects of safety for all operations of the organization. Specific qualifications and experiences are desired while recruiting for key positions in the safety groups.
Among one of the major factors that determine the success or failure of any organization is the positioning of an efficient and capable safety mechanism for all aspects of the business operations. Occupational safety is often a statutory requirement in most countries, where the employer is responsible for ensuring a safe and conducive environment for the employees to perform their duties. While exploring business opportunities with other organizations, all efforts are usually made to examine the practices of safety, including the historical information, as well as feedback from clients of the organization.
Assessments are also made of the capabilities and background of key personnel handling the safety function.
As more awareness is generated among the stakeholders of businesses, more subtle aspects of safety are being explored, both as matters of research, as well as implementing in actual business environments. Issues like inter-personal relationships among employees, or food and drink habits of employees, which affect safety, are some such aspects. In the end, how far an organization achieves their business targets can often depend on how safe their practices are.
